Regional boxers join local live-in camp
Boxers from St Lucia, Anguilla and the Dominican Republic have joined a cadre of T&T boxers at a live-in camp at David Bed and Breakfast Resort in Salybia. And they are expected to be joined by teams from from neighbouring Barbados and Guyana in the coming days.
The T&T boxers who are being led by Olympian Nigel Paul, are preparing for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games Qualifiers in Tijuana Mexico from March 9-18, as well as the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.
The local boxing contingent which includes Aaron Prince, Aaron Hassette, Michael Alexander, Jesse Beckles, Nickell Joseph, Tyrone St Clair, Joshua Sylvester, Nile Mohammed and Tianna Guy, has been at the camp since January 20 as the T&T Boxing Association (TTBA) intensifies preparation ahead of its main aim which is to have a number of TT boxers at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo Japan.
Last week the local fighters were joined by boxers from the region in a united gesture aimed at achieving a common goal.
Cecil Forde, president of the TTBA said it is the first time the Caribbean has gotten together to properly prepare their athletes for major competitions. "The last time they qualified an outstanding amount of athletes was in 2007 when T&T hosted the Pan American Qualifier. Fourteen (14) boxers from the region qualified. With Barbados and Guyana scheduled to join the camp soon, we are looking
forward to being a powerful force in the region" Forde said.
The T&TBA has been battling tooth and nail to keep the camp going, having received no funding from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Sport Company of T&T. Forde said with his association in dire straits he is unable to say how many boxers will go to the CAC and Commonwealth Games if it receives no funding.
Meanwhile, T&T boxers will take on their regional counterparts in a box-off at the Cosmic Boxing Gym in Marabella on Friday and Saturday from 7pm at a cost of $40.
